Petition

Dear Members of the City Council of Princeton New Jersey,

Please find an attached petition signed by the families of children attending the Princeton Charter School.

It is our understanding that as announced in Planet Princeton, the council has brokered an agreement with local developers to donate a payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT) to benefit the local schools.  These monies are estimated to be worth between $300,000 and $500,000 per year.

We are writing to you to inquire as to what consideration was given to the Princeton Charter School students and families in this process.

Princeton Charter School has 424 students in grades K-8 which constitutes 10.4% of the total publicly educated population of Princeton and 18.78% of students in the K-8 grade range.  In addition, we have students who live in the newly constructed residences.

In a budgetary climate where every dollar is important, we would greatly appreciate your consideration of the students and families at Princeton Charter School.  As you know, the families at Charter pay local property taxes including the costs of the various bond referendums for the public schools.  However, Charter does not receive any funds raised by the same referendums that are paid for by our parents.

We look forward to hearing from you, and we would welcome the opportunity to discuss this issue with the council.

Sincerely,

The students and families of Princeton Charter School
